Cashless parking meters rolled out successfully in Southwark

06/01/2010
Drivers in the London borough of Southwark no longer have to worry about having the right change to park at a meter. Neither do they have to return to their car to feed the meter if they need more time.

These are the days of the new cashless parking meter, and Southwark has rolled out the scheme after a trial showed the new meters to be a success.

The region now has almost 400 cashless parking meters. These enable drivers to top up using their mobile phones, with the money being taken out of their bank accounts automatically. The drivers can also text the number to top up the cash in the meter to pay for a longer period of parking from wherever they happen to be when their money starts running out. No more running back to the meter with only half your shopping done!

The scheme was introduced in January last year and there has since been a 276 per cent increase in usage.

However, for those who do not like to use the new system, coin payment is still accepted at all meters in the borough.
