Millions recouped from drivers in Australia through use of wheel clamping

Australia’s Queensland government has recouped close to A$5 million in previously unpaid penalty notices as a result of introducing wheel clamping in the region.
The wheel clamping was introduced to disable the cars of the worst offending motorists in terms of mounting up unpaid fines. The defaulters are told that their cars will be clamped if they do not pay the fines they owe.
The measures were only introduced in January and already 439 fine defaulters have paid up to avoid their cars being clamped. The outstanding debt totalled A$4.8 million, according to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry.
Cameron Dick, the Attorney General in the region, said, "these enforcement measures are not a magic bullet, but fine dodgers are getting the message – pay your fine or lose your wheels.”
He continued, “we have tried the carrot approach in the past. Now we are using the stick. I am pleased to say the stick is having some effect. I say to all fine bludgers, if you are a chronic fine defaulter, you should get your affairs in order or get a comfortable pair of shoes because you could find yourself doing a lot more walking in the future."
