New parking measures in Cardiff in place

New parking measures came in to force in Cardiff this week, which council bosses claim will make parking easier for residents and tougher for those who try to play the system.

Council parking wardens and their wheelclamping contractors have been extra vigilant on the streets of the Welsh capital since the change on July 5, after promising to "get tough" on problem parkers.

Cardiff Council traffic chief, Paul Thomas, said the changes may seem strict but they merely reflect the priorities of residents.

"We are changing the way that we deal with parking in the city to reflect the priorities that people have told us," he said.

"All our parking enforcement officers will have handheld PCs that can print tickets and all that data is logged on our system. They will also have digital cameras that allow them to take photos of the offending vehicle."

As part of implementing the measures, £500,000 has been spent on repainting double-yellow lines, increasing parking fines for certain offences, some to more than double their prior cost, and keeping four emergency vehicles that can be dispatched to provide immediate enforcement.

Wardens will also wear new black and red outfits and work from 7am to 10pm. The measures were approved by the city council despite one councillor calling them "a reign of terror".
